Diesel hit an all-time high of $5.85 a gallon, and TV 5's James Selton brought Rey Treviño III on to explain why that number reaches people who never buy a drop of it.

Diesel is the dark horse of the physical economy. It moves grain, freight, and construction equipment, so when diesel gets scarce, everything downstream goes up with it. That record is 3 cents above the previous high set in June 2022, and it puts diesel roughly $2 a gallon above where the national average sat last September at $3.70.

With crude near $90 a barrel and supply chains disrupted by the war with Iran, Rey's read is that once that conflict is resolved, crude settles back around $80, gasoline drops below $3, and diesel comes in under $3.50. Factoring in the new agreement with Venezuela and Iranian oil coming back under control, his timeline is 6 to 18 months.
